If you were wondering whats the correlation, Shahrukh Khan is the new brand ambassador for Compaq. I just wonder how much can the Shahrukh Khan’s publicity help in driving people to buy a IT product like laptop whose main targets are Corporates and soho. What everyone wants is better prices and good support. Lets see how Compaq sells in King Khan’s name.

Summing up what all I have lost in the last one week.
1. Two branded denim jeans torn near the knee while the project work.
2. One Scientific calc, Casio 991MS to be precise. Not the first time this has happened, the one I purchased last week happens to be the third calc in two years of engg.
3. To add insult to injury, I lost nearly 800 bucks on my way back home today. Dont exactly remember when it might have fallen from the pocket, but I presume it to be when i casually removed my cellphone from the trouser pocket to check if it is still working.
Ever seen so many graphic cards together? Not me for sure! These pics of 38 graphic cards are from an eBay Australia auction. So if someone is interested you can strike a deal here. Hurry up if you are serious, not much time remaining. Got this link while checking out the Techenclave forums.
Couldnt think of a more appropriate word than Insane for the title. Insane for the simple fact of taking a pic of so many cards together where most people crave for one.
I am running so short of space in my notebook hard disk that my flash-drive based 1 gig mp3 player has more free space than the total combined free space on my hard disc. Looks like I need an upgrade to a DVD writer or probably a bigger/external hdd.
All the future upgrades on hold till the warranty on laptop expires in April.
It was the first day of the project, the venue was Vihar lake and I was under the impression of Powai Lake. It was a very beautiful place, especially the waters. Being a restricted area, it has been kept quite clean and protected from us. The actual site of the project was just aside the lake bed – a bumpy, uneven, wild burnt grass everywhere. First impressions what any Mumbaikar would get is, Can such a thing actually exist in Mumbai. A near forest in the backdrop to sandwitch the project site with the lake.
Those nine hours were seriously very hectic considering it was the first day. I was the old one without a cap in a group of near 80 students and was spanked badd verbally by the head surveyor. So , I would be wearing a cap after a decade or so. Three more days to go.
One of the most tiring day I have ever had.
The Survey projects starts from tommorow, and we had been briefed with some of the rules and regulations to be followed. For starters, Since the Vihar Lake, Powai is the official source of the drinking water supplied in Mumbai, its a restricted area. So, All the strict rules associated with it like no cameras in any form, be it the old fashioned, digital or the cellphones are to be followed. Secondly, Everyone has to carry 2-3 litres on Drinking water along with him coz the nearest source of drinking water is a couple of kms away. INSANE. The place where the lake is, I am told, is far away from healthy civilization and not much to chill around. Imagine 4 days in such a place where there is not even a descent restaurant or canteen even if it was allowed to leave the premises. So that leaves only one option with everyone, to carry a tiffin box, I dont remember when was the last time I carried one. And more importantly, students are warned not to make night stay in the near by guest-houses, bcoz the surrounding locality isnt nice to say the least.
Conducting the survey work in a new place other than for the college premises, would be a welcome change but these rules are so irritating.
After almost a month and half of engaging in everything except studies, I see myself barely managing to coverup what I have missed. This weekend has ended in doing just that. But i dont regret about it. If all the academics things done within a month, can be covered up in a few days taking some pains, then so be it. I dont like making the long journey to college and realizing nothing worth is being done there. Rather I would prefer to sit back at home and enjoy the smaller things in life. The coming week is gonna be very hectic mainly cause of the Geomat Project to be conducted near Powai Lake the whole week. So, wouldnt be around much for a while. And finally its time to make use of the long battery of the mp3 player.
Lets see how things go.
The college in which I study is quite old. I dont even bother to get the exact year when it started. It was a long drawing session today, had to complete quite a few drawing sheets, standing from 9am to 5pm. It just happened that I decided to open the huge drawer which was there beneath the table I was drawing on. There was this old newspaper in there beneath a pile of dust. What struck me most about it was, the paper was 12 years old. The mess lying there for 12 yrs is not the thing I have this mentioned here. The funny part is what was on the newspaper. The piece of newspaper actually had a Nokia Advertisement, featuring some old model and what it could do for you. Reading it was so funny, I couldnt resist sharing it with the friends around me. And then the usual, make fun of every line from the ad, which goes on in a group. The almost walky talky phone, if I am not mistaken, was a Nokia 2210 something.
If only I had a cellphone with camera, it would have been fun sharing it with others. I dont want to say anything about the cleanliness in the drawing room. Those who are from VJTI, the MDH drawing halls need to introduction. But atleast they were getting renovated last time I was there.
No, its not a name of a book from TMH or O’Reilly. Its the time taken for my get hooked on to Ubuntu. I managed to complete my Ubuntu download on Sunday evening in approx. 22 hrs. Within no time, I burnt a disc and installed it. Installation was a breeze, this was the first time I had installed a debian distro. Installation went on smoothly, took me about half an hour to get into the desktop.
Ubuntu turned out to be one of the very few distros in which I managed to configure my net connection. This wasnt the first time, I tried to get familiar with a linux distro, but as it turns out I have finally found a nice distro to be using regularly. With all the help from Atul (techno_funky) who himself got versed with the OS in the last few weeks, I managed to get some basic help. So thats done with the 24 hrs part.
It was time someone had to come up with the SLI technology on the notebook arena and there is nothing to get disappointed about. If the Go6800’s , Go7800GTX , the higher Mobility Radeon series were a ‘big’ thing to come to notebooks, SLI is ‘huge’. Having two of these similar gpus from nvidia would suffice all gaming needs for some time to come. So gaming laptops in real sense of the term are about to make an entry which would even give their desktop counterparts a run for their money. (more…)
