Acer is clean

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

Alright, this is a blog post after ages. It is really tough to get out of the shell, once you are inside it. I hope you will agree, if you don’t – watch the Indian Cricket team in action tomorrow.

As for Acer being clean, rather the batteries in the laptops they sell. They have finally confirmed they do not need to recall any batteries they used in their laptops. From exploding batteries to laptops on fire due to them, they were all in news over the last couple of months. During all this time, I eagerly awaited for some word from Acer about their battery recall, if any. No, I am not an over cautious person. I only aspired to get the batteries replaced for free. Anything to replace the dying batteries which give a backup of max 15 minutes. Can’t blame me for thinking like that :)

So, what I hoped for isn’t coming. Feels great to own something which has no issues. As for Sony, they are just cursed as the battery recall number nears a 8 digit numeral. Great!

PS: Very few Acer’s used Sony batteries. Sanyo mostly. But then again I am just bitching. Apple, Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway, Hitachi, IBM/Lenovo, Panasonic, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba all have had issues. Acer shouldn’t miss a trick in the trade and make a most of things going in their favor. Best of Luck!

All in a day

Friday, September 15th, 2006

I must admit this day was an adventurous day of sorts. It is not always that you get to visit the construction site of the tallest building in Mumbai and quite possibly this part of Asia. Being on the edge of the 40 odd floor under contruction wasn’t thrilling enough, the birds eye view of the entire Mumbai was just awesome! You have to see it to believe it. Despite some heavy smog(Mumbai’s pollution!), we could clearly see distant places – like Nehru Planetarium from Mumbai Central!

The project for S.D. Towers, consists of two twin towers, each around 62 odd storeys by S.D. Corporation. (If you think like me, there is no connecting bridge! ‘It is a resendial building’ – I was answered. Our batch of 30 students were well instructed with the project details, construction fundas and the structural design of the same from the contractors – Shapurji Palanji (or is it Shapurji & Pallonji & Co.). The other prominent names with the project include Hafeez Contractor for the Architecture and the Pune based Y.S.Sane for the Structural Design.

That is pretty much it. When I returned home, I was happy to see the Dish TV package getting upgraded. While I was still trying to come to terms with the slew of channels on the full package, I had fallen asleep. When I woke up, it was late evenings and the rain Gods were at it again. The window just behind my desk was left open, and my laptop enjoyed a nice bath. I had to let it dry off for a few hours before I could gather the courage to power it on.

Demonoid Trackers Hash Fails

Something New

Monday, September 11th, 2006

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company officials on Monday disconnected power supply to ‘Ramgiri,’ the official residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, as a step to recover dues to the tune of Rs 120,000.

Entire Story at Rediff.com

This is some nice bit of news, seriously. Something which we dont see that happening to government officials, atleast not to the State’s CM. Nice to see, some actions are actually been taken regardless of the prominence of the person involved. When major parts of Maharashtra face power cuts every single day for hours altogether providing uninterrupted electricity to a few big cities, an action like this is quite justified.

There is just something about this news which makes me feel happy. Probably, I am Evil.

Talk about a rip-off

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

L-Computers is a PC maker which had shut the company down in late 2004 due to lack of financing, but has reborn itself since then and become a public company listed.

They were in news today for their plans to manufacture a Quad SLI gaming laptop. Honestly, no comments over it. The company has a past history of announcing vaporware products.

Hell with their products, just take a look over their website. Looks familiar doesn’t it?

Apple would surely be proud of the fact that someone from the same business, actually has the guts to rip their layout from top to bottom and the left to the right.

When Philosophers reunite…

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

There is no fun in being alive till the wee hours of the morning and having no one in your messenger list to interact with. Luckily, I never had any difficulties to have friends to resort to and have a nice chat. Last night was a similar one. Anuj had dragged his deadline to get back to work in Gurgaon by another day. For those who are not aware, he is a big philsopher – his blog proves it! What we talked turned out to be real valuable stuff – typical philosophic material! Enough of the backdrop, have a look at it yourself. From what is life and how to live it talks, to what engineering is all about.

I am on a roll

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

It has been three days since I have been having a good fortune of enjoying a broadband internet connection. There has been literally no full fledged downloading.

I am just happy to get back to the internet full-time on a 24×7 connection and just surf! You-tube, Stumble Upon, websites, forums, blogs – you name it. There have been times in these three days that I have actually forgotten where I am and what I am doing – but what the heck! This is some serious fun.

Moreover, I have helped more people in these days than I ever have in the last few years. I dont have a clue how I am doing this. Right now, I am prepping up a project for a friend! I would have never even completed my own things in time before.

I have clicked atleast over 50 google/yahoo and other ads on webpages that I have liked in the past few days. I guess I am just passing some goodwill, may be not. But that doesnt change the fact – I am on a roll! lol… literally

The wait is killing me

Friday, July 28th, 2006

I am just running out of things to do in my spare time. Only a few things to cheer about is the fact that Lost and Prison Break would soon be on air again. It is something that I am looking forward to. I find these shows pretty interesting.

I am more anxious about Prison Break rather than Lost. I think it has more to do with the fact that Prison Break would resume in it’s Season two in a little over three weeks time. Lost Season 3 is yet a long way away – more than 2 long months. I just cant wait for them to resume back.

This time around I would be saved from the burden of downloading these shows myself. Within the last few months, I have given the Lost and Prison Break chaska to a few of my friends. I have literally watched the entire seasons again in the last few weeks. Well, almost. I hope they stick to their words, and I dont have to download the new episodes. I can channelize my bandwidth to something else.

Yes, I did it

Finally gathered all my courage to go in for a BIOS update for my laptop. Stupid Acer’s default BIOS didnt have any options for allocating more than 64MB for video memory. This issue shouldnt have been there in the first place, because they marketed their laptop saying max 128MB of shared video memory.

The BIOS files were extinct on all the Acer websites worldwide. The one which had the BIOS, didnt have any mention whether it supports the different variants of the series. But almost after 2 months when I got hold of the BIOS, curiosity got the best of me and i was itching to flash the bios. Without fearing the consequences, went ahead with the BIOS upgrade and it went smoothly. No issues whatsoever.

Looking at the bright side, I can now try out Windows Vista Beta 2 minus the Aero on my laptop. Well, something is always better than nothing. I had been eyeing on the same for a long time, but now its time to actually do it.

While I hit the Publish button for this post, I am making a 15GB room for the next Windows edition install and persuading a friend to download the Beta 2 iso.
